A Langley Mill man who was arrested after offensive tweets were posted online about a missing boy in Scotland has been charged with sending malicious communications.

Darren Shepstone was arrested on suspicion of posting the messages on Twitter, which were linked to the disappearance of three-year-old Mikaeel Kular in Edinburgh.

The 26-year-old was arrested on January 18 and has now been charged with sending malicious communications.

He will appear at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court on Monday, February 24.

Police Scotland asked Derbyshire Constabulary to assist in the investigation after complaints were made by people in Edinburgh about offensive Twitter messages.

Police had previously released information that Mr Shepstone was from Heanor, which the force later revealed was incorrect. Mr Shepstone now resides in Langley Mill.
