Latvian refugee at Stanton in 1950s

An interesting story accompanies this photograph which was posted by Facebook user Sarah-Jane Watkinson on the Ilson Bygones profile.

She explained: “This is a picture of my grandad at Stanton, I’m not sure when this was taken but I’m guessing late 1950s.

“His name was Talavaldis, but everyone called him Johnny - shortly after he arrived from Latvia as a refugee in 1947, the foreman at the factory he was working at with some other Latvians and Poles decided that their names were too complicated and picked new ones for them out of a hat.”
