Ilkeston actor Robert Lindsay paid tribute to his dead father as he appeared on ITV chat show Loose Women last week.

My Family star Robert, whose dad Norman Stevenson served in the Royal Navy during World War Two, asked the presenters and audience on the show to be upstanding in memory of those who sacrificed their lives and fought as part of the D Day landings and Second World War.

He said: “Twenty years ago me and my brother took my dad and we were lying on the beach, we had to lie because we’d had a fair amount of French Cognac, and he told us about that night.

“He said ‘You’ll never know fear like I experienced that day’ and I’m going to make myself cry, it actually really gets me.

“He was on HMS Friendship one of the first boats in and he said the captain told them, some of you won’t make it. You just can’t imagine that.

“I always think of him and my fear disappears.”
