An Ilkeston micro-brewery was granted the “surreal” opportunity to pull pints of one of its charity-supporting real ales in the Houses of Parliament bar.

The family-run North Star brewery, based at the Gallows Industrial Estate in the town, visited Westminster last week to showcase new beer, ‘Molly’s Pride’ in the Stranger’s Bar at the Houses of Parliament.

The beer, brewed to raise funds for Nottingham-based charity School for Parents, which supports babies and pre-school children with conditions such as cerebral palsy, was pulled by sales representative, Jessica Bower, who is daughter to head brewer, Richard Bower.

She served members of the All Party Parliamentary Beer Group and Erewash MP, Jessica Lee.

After a tour of Parliament and attending Prime Minister’s Questions in the visitors’ gallery, Richard Bower got the opportunity to explain to Jessica Lee how he had developed his business and why he had chosen to support the charity.

“My friend Daryl’s daughter, Molly, started attending the school in Nottingham, and he explained to me the great support they had received — that’s why we chose to name the beer after Molly,” he said.

“Being at the Houses of Parliament and getting to see my home-brewed beer served was surreal.

“I’m hoping it will raise the profile of our business to a wider clientele as well as raise further funds for this wonderful school.”

He added: “When you think that there are almost 14,000 micro-breweries across the UK, we were given a brilliant opportunity — one that I will never forget.”

Jessica Lee said: “It’s fantastic to see a local Erewash beer in Parliament. Molly’s Pride tastes great.”

“It was a pleasure to meet Richard and the rest of the North Star Team and I can report that the beer has proven a real hit.”
