Man in court in relation to masked raid

Masked robbers threatened staff and customers at a shop in Ilkeston before making off with a haul of cigarettes.

The One Stop store in Charlotte Street, Cotmanhay, was targeted at 10.50pm on Friday night (August 15).

It was the second time the convenience store had been targeted following a robbery in July 2013. Police confirmed that no weapons were used by the three masked men and are appealing for witnesses to the incident.

Detective Inspector Brian Bilby, who is leading the case, revealed that arrests were made following the raid.

He said: “It was a raid by a group of people unknown to the staff, who were made to feel intimidated. No weapons were involved. The investigation is on-going. If anyone has any knowledge of the stolen cigarettes, it would be of interest to the police.”

He said a number of raids had occurred across the country in which cigarettes had been stolen because of their high value.

A One Stop spokesman said: “We are aware of the incident at the Ilkeston store and are helping the police with their inquiries.”

A Nottingham man has been charged with conspiracy to commit robbery in connection with the incident and appeared at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court as the ‘Tiser went to press.
A 33-year-old who was also arrested has been bailed pending further enquiries. Reports that a 16-year-old boy was arrested in connection with the robbery were incorrect.
