Keeping quiet and doing as you’re told is the secret to a long and happy marriage — according to a Stanley Common couple on their diamond wedding anniversary.
Stan and Eileen Owen celebrate 60 years since the day they wed today (September 19).
The pair, parents to Marilyn, 59, David, 57, Jackie, 53, Glyn, 50 and Kate 48, met at the Welbeck on Bath Street, Ilkeston, and decided to tie the knot soon after.
Mr Owen, a former miner, said: “Back then the Welbeck was the meeting place, it was a licensed restaurant but we never went there for the food.”
The couple married at Heanor Church and lived in a coal board house in Stanley Common before moving to Valley View Drive 18 years ago.
Mrs Owen said: “We’ve always got on and neither of us are the boss, we’re a partnership.”
Mr Owen said: “We’ve never had a big argument, we’ve had arguments, people who say they’ve not are lying, but we’ve never not spoken to each other.”
Mrs Owen added: “We love each other that’s the main thing.”
They will celebrate with a champagne tea this afternoon and a party for their family, including seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren at Gladstone Lodge on Sunday.
