I was born on Nottingham Road in Ilkeston in 1916, just below Whitworth Road in my dad’s shop.
My father, William Brown, made ice cream in the back yard where I helped to churn it.
We had a horse called Meg and dad delivered the ice cream around Ilkeston with his cart.
When I was about seven or eight, I used to deliver the groceries on foot for my father. I sometimes delivered it as far as Cotmanhay.
I also remember Peg’s Farm, which was off Nottingham Road. Opposite Albany Street there was a passage where I could reach the farm.
