Broxtowe MP Anna Soubry has caused uproar by suggesting that there is a link between being poor and being obese.
The Tory Health Minister told a national newspaper that it was ‘heartbreaking’ that people from deprived backgrounds were not getting the right nutrition due to ‘an abundance of bad food’.
“When I go to my constituency, in fact when I walk around, you can almost now tell somebody’s background by their weight,” she told The Daily Telegraph.
“Obviously, not everybody who is overweight comes from deprived backgrounds but that’s where the propensity lies.”
She has faced criticism for her remarks, including from Erewash borough councillor Louis Booth.
He said: “Has she, like our MP Jessica Lee, needed to hand out food parcels to her constituents?
“And if she has, did she quip ‘You’re too fat to receive this – come back when you’ve lost some weight’?”
