Broxtowe MP Anna Soubry has spoken of her disappointment following Nottinghamshire County Council’s Planning and Licensing Committee’s decision to grant planning permission to UK Coal for an open case mine at Shortwood in the Broxtowe constituency.

Anna said, “I am profoundly disappointed that Nottinghamshire County Council has voted in favour of open cast mining despite submissions from myself and others on behalf of Trowell and Cossall as well as Awsworth and Nuthall which will suffer knock-on effects.”

Permission was granted despite strong opposition to the proposals.

Anna added: “As a result, I shall refer the matter to Eric Pickles MP, Department for Communities and Local Government, and I will ask him to call-in this decision for environmental and other reasons. The site is in important Green Belt land and an intolerable burden will be placed on already overly congested roads.”
