Police are still at the scene of a murder in Ilkeston this morning (Thursday).
The 48-year-old man has been named locally as Mick Moss.
Officers are still seeking two men seen leaving his house in Canal Street around the time of the incident about 9pm last night.
They are carrying out house-to-house inquiries along Canal Street and crime scene investigators are completing forensic work.
Police were called to a house in the street following a report of a disturbance at around 9pm last night.
The man was found to have been assaulted at the house and despite treatment by paramedics his injuries proved fatal.
A post mortem examination is due to take place today to determine how the man died.
Residents on the street said they were shocked by what happened to a neighbour many of them knew.
They reported seeing a silver car speeding away soon after and two men exiting the victim’s house by the front door.
A Canal Street resident said he found the victim lying on his living room floor moaning and covered in blood after a neighbour said he had been assaulted.
“I looked through the window and saw him on the floor - he was still alive when I spoke to him but he was mumbling,” he said.
“My neighbour called the police and paramedics.
“I cannot believe it. I’ve known Mick for years. He was only a little bloke.”
Another Canal Street resident said the victim, who was the carer for an elderly gentleman and a father-of-six, was well known on the street and well thought of.
She added: “He was sat in my living on Saturday night having a drink with my husband.
“My daughter phoned me this morning and told me what had happened - when I saw the lights last night I just assumed it was paramedics.
“You get so much of this kind of thing around here you get sick of going out and looking.”
Anyone with information should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
