A young music student from Ilkeston has beaten off more than 10,000 entrants to be chosen as the face of a leading sports retailer.
Jake Walker, 18, of Shipley View, entered the JD Sports face of the year 2014 competition on Facebook in December as a joke.
And he won the contest and has already attended photo shoots for the brand with his first campaign set to be published on billboards on April 7.
“I couldn’t have dreamed of how far I’d have come in this competition and now to win it, it’s just overwhelming.” he said.
“Friends and colleagues had always suggested I look into modelling but I didn’t really take it seriously.”
The Derby College student, who also has more than 4,000 YouTube hits singing cover versions of pop songs, has now become one of 15 male and female models to represent the brand throughout their 2014 seasonal campaigns. The recruitment process saw him attend three rounds of photo shoots in Birmingham and London and he was only notified of his success last week.
He added: “I got the e-mail on the bus sitting next to my girlfriend and we just both couldn’t stop shaking.
“It just proves that if you’re brave enough to pursue something it can often pay off.”
