Derby College’s new £10 million Ilkeston campus on the site of the former Magistrates Court in the town centre will officially open to students on Monday (January 13).
Around 800 students and 200 staff will be based at the new purpose-built campus on a wide range of courses.
The campus will feature a training hair and beauty salon as well as new engineering and construction workshop facilities.
Head of the Ilkeston campus Helen Jefferson said: “Staff have been working hard to get the campus ready since it was handed over by the contractors in late December and we are looking forward to welcoming the students back next week.”
Derby College Chief Executive Mandie Stravino added: “This is an exciting new chapter for further education in Ilkeston.
“We made a commitment when we merged with South East Derbyshire College that significant investment would be made in facilities for staff and students in Ilkeston and we are looking forward to the opening of the new campus.
“The multi-million pound investment in new facilities will enable students to realise their full potential and gain the valuable work and life skills that are so vital in these demanding economic times, both for themselves as individuals and for local employers.
“It will provide the local community in Ilkeston and the surrounding area with the state of the art facilities that they deserve and brings facilities in this area in line with the multi-million pound investment in our other sites.”
The college’s former home on Field Road has been sold to developers St James Securities and work is set to start soon on a new retail store and petrol station for Morrison as well as 39 new private and social housing homes.
