Traders hope a new weekly outdoor market will help regenerate Matlock and prove to be a real asset to the town.
The hard work of local traders’ group Matlock Town Team has paid off as Derbyshire County Council has granted them £10,000 to put plans in action for the market, which will be held by the clock tower in Hall Leys Park, Matlock.
Wendy Spencer, director of the town team, said: “I’m really pleased that after months of hard work we have been granted £10,000 to produce what we feel will be a great asset to the town.
“We hope the market will improve footfall and regenerate Matlock by not only making the town more appealing to visitors but by bringing the locals back into the town centre.”
The group will run the market every Wednesday from the end of May.
It will feature more than 20 stalls with the aim of producing new start up businesses along with already established market traders.
The proposal is subject to the approval by Derbyshire Dales District Council’s Community Committee, which will vote on the matter on April 10.
Steven Murphy, of Peak Promotion, said: “This is a great opportunity for people who have always wanted to start their own business and don’t want to commit the funds it takes to start a shop.”
Rob Short, chairman of the town team added: “We’d like to thank the councils for giving us this opportunity and we hope to improve the towns shopping experience.”
The market will run as a pilot scheme and, if successful, will become a permanent feature.
Councillor Andy Botham, deputy cabinet member for jobs, economy and transport, said: “The market will help to regenerate Matlock by making it a more attractive place to visit which will help existing retailers in the town.
“It will also help offer opportunities for new businesses to start up at a low cost.”
Commenting on Facebook, Jake Keen said: “Brilliant decision!
“Let’s hope local businesses capitalise on the opportunity and reclaim our local economy!”
Allan Janssens added: “It be good for the people to have a choice were to shop as we did years ago markets were more friendly.”
Debbie Hirstwood commented: “Fantastic news.”
Debbie Steeples said: “I think it is a brilliant step forward for Matlock and can’t wait to hear more about it.”
