A organisation which has helped shape Chesterfield town centre will unveil a special plaque to mark its 50th anniversary.

Chesterfield and District Civic Society was established in 1964 and was part of the movement to save Chesterfield market when it was threatened with closure to make way for a proposed shopping centre.

The survival of the Market Hall and its recent £4million refurbishment will be celebrated at the unveiling of the blue plaque which will take place at the historic building at 6pm on April 8.

After the unveiling, the society is inviting guests to attend a free talk about how residents can help shape the future of the town. This will be held in the Assembly Rooms from 7pm. Register for the event at www.chesterfield.co.uk/civicsociety

Bryan Thompson, chairman of the society, said: “Times have certainly changed for the better. We are all committed to conserving and enhancing local identity to make Chesterfield a better place to live, work and enjoy life.”
