Health chiefs have urged smokers in Ilkeston and Long Eaton to mark the New Year by joining the hundreds of thousands who have already stubbed it out for good nationwide with a little help from the NHS.
The gauntlet was thrown down this week by NHS Erewash Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), which is championing a new drop-in clinic being run by Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Trust’s Stop Smoking Team in Ilkeston Market Place.
The sessions in the Cantaloupe Centre start on Saturday January 18 and will run weekly between 9.30am and 11.30am.
Dr Avi Bhatia, Chair of NHS Erewash CCG, said: “Every cigarette you smoke causes real harm to your health but the good news is that your body starts to recover as soon as you stop.
“Your family means the world to you – and it will mean the world to them when you quit.
“You’ll be sparing them the harmful effects of second-hand smoke. “
The clinics will offer counselling plus free nicotine replacement therapies.
