Residents have started a petition after a temporary 30m phone mast was erected on their street with no prior warning.

Abbi Brown, of Field Road, has set up the online petition in a bid to get the mast removed.

She said: “It just turned up one day and no-one on the street knew it was even coming.

“I can’t believe that a phone mast can just be set up and that’s that.

“We are all very concerned about the effects on our health, whether it is temporary or not.

“There is a school nearby as well and it is claimed that effects on children are worse.”

The mast has been erected as the exisiting antenna on the Derby College buildings will be turned off next week as the site is prepared for the development of the new Morrisons store and housing.

Planning permission is not required if a mast is being set up for six months or less.

Abbi, 29, added: “It’s not just health concerns we have, it’s being powered by a generator which is noisy and kicks off a diesel smell.

“It’s an absolute eyesore in my view.”

Another neighbour, who did not want to be named, added: “We are a small street of only 13 houses.

“The impact of the new Morrisons supermarket and of this phone mast, on us, is immense and yet I think we are not being afforded any consideration in these matters.”
