JOY AS CARE HOME ESCAPES AXE - Campaigners, residents, families and staff celebrated after Beechcroft Care Home in West Hallam was saved from closure.

RESIDENTS SAY FARM MOVE IS QUACKERS - Cotmanhay pensioners vented their anger after plans were announced to move a community farm next door to their homes.

PLAN FOR ‘DEATH TRAP’ BUILDING - A derelict former solicitors’ building labelled a ‘death trap’ by neighbours and the fire service was finally set to be sorted when plans to transform it into flats were announced.

HEROIC BROTHERS TO THE RESCUE - A pair of brothers were hailed as heroes after rescuing a woman trapped in an overturned car after a dramatic crash.

SAD DAY AS CO-OP CLOSES - Emotions ran high for staff at the Co-op’s flagship department store in Ilkeston as it closed its doors for the last time.

SAVE OUR SOCIAL CLUB - A plea was launched to find a new committee for the Kirk Hallam Social Club after it surrendered its licence after trouble.

TOWN CENTRE EVENTS IN LIMBO - Crowds of visitors expected to pack out Ilkeston Market Place for a host of events organised and approved by Erewash Borough Council never showed up because events did not take place.

FIGHT FOR CO-OP BUILDING - The Advertiser launched a campaign to ensure the empty Co-op building didn’t fall to rack and ruin and was used as a springboard to rejuvenate the town.

SEPTEMBER

TRADERS UP IN ARMS OVER WEDDING PLANS -Market traders raised concerns and said they feared losing their livelihood if plans to hold weddings at Ilkeston Town Hall are approved.

HUSBAND AND WIFE KILLED IN AIR TRAGEDY - West Hallam couple Carl and Kathryn Whiteley were tragically killed when their Cessna Crusader aircraft crashed into the sea off the coast of Jersey.

NEIGHBOURS TO THE RESCUE - Neighbours showed real community spirit after rallying round for a pensioner left homeless after a devastating fire in Kirk Hallam.

VANDALS LEAVE KIDS IN TEARS - Mindless vandals were slammed by parents and staff at the Cantelupe Centre’s pre-school after they smashed roof lights forcing the centre to close.
