The Shadow Secretary for Education, Tristram Hunt, visited Ilkeston this week to promote one of Labour’s key election pledges.

He spoke with parents outside both Cotmanhay Infants and Juniors about the the £800 million scheme that the party will implement if they win next year’s general election.

It will offer 25 hours of free childcare a week, will benefit the parents of three-year-olds and four-year-olds.

The care would be on offer between the hours of 8am and 6pm in all primary schools.

It is estimated the parents of 700 children in Erewash would be eligible for the extended hours.

Mr Hunt, pictured above with Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate Catherine Atkinson, said:”The extra hours would enable parents to go back to work and we know that the best way out of poverty for young families is to have both parents working.”
