Slideshow: King George V opens town school

Waiting for Video...

A special selection of images feature in this week’s Memory Lane.

Submitted by reader Andrew Knighton, his collection shows the day that King George V and Queen Mary visited Ilkeston 100 years ago.

They were in the town to open Ilkeston School, hence the name of the road, as well carry out other engagements.

Despite being in town to open the school His Royal Highness did not actually visit the site and instead pressed a button in the town’s Market Place which unlocked the school’s gates. The images are taken from postcards available to buy in local newsagents following the 1914 visit.
