Sticking to a tried and trusted format of being a family-run business has been credited with serving up success for an Ilkeston chip shop.
For Kerry’s Chippy, on Pelham Street, has battered the opposition to be crowned the ‘Tiser’s Chip Shop of the Year in a competition voted for by our readers.
Owner Kerry Naylor said: “We were so shocked to find out we’d won.
“There’s a lot of competition and we’re just so excited.
“All the staff were jumping around, we couldn’t believe it.”
Kerry, 46, has run the shop for almost 20 years after taking over from her parents.
Her dad, Denis Naylor, still goes in to “test the chips” every day.
Kerry’s daughter, Jodi, also works in the shop and oldest daughter Toni and son Joe also help out. Her husband Russell, a bricklayer, is always on hand to make any repairs.
A team of seven staff man the fryers and serve up lunches and dinners to customers.
Kerry said: “We’re only a small team but we’re all friends and family.
“I’ve known some of them since we were growing up and I’ve known one of my girls since she was born.
“We just have fun and enjoy ourselves and I think the customers pick up on it and they like it too.
“All of our regulars were quick to say congratulations, they’d be asking us about if we’d heard anything ever since it was first in the paper.”
Among others to offer their congratulations were Jackson’s Chippy.
Kerry said: “They sent us a card and a bottle of Champagne, which was lovely.
“We’re all friends, although we’re running the same business we’re not in direct competition.”
