Tom, 15, set to step out at Twickenham

A Kirk Hallam pupil will step out onto the hallowed turf of Twickenham ahead of the crucial RBS Six Nations clash between England and Wales.

Fifteen-year-old Tom Caines, who studies at Kirk Hallam Community College won the opportunity after he and fellow pupils designed a unique rugby shirt for college teams as part of a kit design workshop headed by Canterbury, the official kit supplier of England rugby.

He also performed a presentation on the importance of the shirt and the National Anthem to the team as part of the competition.

He will now join England’s official rugby soprano, Laura Wright, along with 99 other pupils from representing schools to perform the National Anthem in front of a sell-out crowd of more than 80,000 while offically revealing Kirk Hallam’s unique shirt design at Twickenham on Sunday, March 9.

Tom said: “I am really excited to think that I will be able to meet some of the England players and stand on the Twickenham pitch in front of the huge crowd, I hope it will be a great experience.”

A spokesman for the school added: “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for Tom who is a keen sportsman and a committed rugby player.

“We are delighted to have been a part of the programme which has seen the school benefit from rugby coaching and mini tournaments.”

The Canterbury kit design workshops were part of All Schools, England Rugby’s programme which aims to encourage more secondary state schools to play rugby.

During the workshops pupils got to learn about core values of the game and the importance of the rugby shirt before putting thoughts and designs to paper.

Canterbury is providing each of the 100 schools, that took part with their bespoke shirts for their school teams to play competitive rugby in.
