Erewash MP Jessica Lee has joined politicians in paying to tribute to Tony Benn.
The Labour stalwart and former Chesterfield MP died aged 88 on Friday after an illness.
Jessica told the Advertiser: “Tony Benn was an incredible politician, he was very popular and was held in highly thought of by all sides of the political sector.
“I was never fortunate enough to meet him but I know he will be hugely missed and I send my warmest condolences to his family and friends.”
Councillor Anne Western, Leader of Derbyshire County Council said: “Tony Benn was a hugely influential and popular politician, the likes of whom we’ll never see again.
“He lived by his values, which inspired trust and belief in those who voted for him, who he served faithfully.
“His contribution to public life, at both local and national level, during his long and distinguished career was immense.
“His life’s work helped make a difference to countless Derbyshire residents and his legacy will live on.”
Labour’s Erewash Parliamentary candidate, Cathreine Atkinson said: “Tony supported me when I was taking my first steps into politics. I will always treasure that support.
“He said what he believed and believed what he said - and that is the test of integrity that he leaves the next generation of politicians.
“He was able to inspire young people as well as old by reminding us that we have the power to make the world better. Tony Benn seemed to speak from the very soul of the Labour movement.”
