An unseen thief jumped into an allotment gardener’s van and drove off to the shock of its owner.
The driver backed his vehicle into the gates of the allotment gardens off The Ropewalk, Ilkeston at about 5.40pm on Monday (August 19).
He then turned off the engine and got out to open the metal gates to the allotments, where he keeps animals, leaving the keys in the ignition.
As he stopped to tie up one of his two dogs, at the rear of the van, out of nowhere a thief, who may have been hiding nearby, jumped into the driver’s seat and sped off in the blue Peugeot Berlingo.
Police are asking anyone who may have seen a blue van in the area at the time to call them immediately with information.
A spokesman said the man visits the allotment frequently.
He could not give officers a description of the thief as he did not get a good look at him or her.
“Unfortunately this is quite a secluded area, there are no houses or CCTV,” rhe spokesman said.
Call police on 101 with information about the theft.
