A collision which saw a car end up on its roof after narrowly missing two Ilkeston homes by inches, has been described by neighbours as ‘unbelievable.’

The car, a black Alfa Romeo crashed into the front wall of two properties, on Lord Haddon Road, at approximately 1.10am on April 4, following a collision with a stationary vehicle, firefighters have said.

Giles Matsell who lives across the road from the site of the accident described hearing a loud bang which sounded similar to a gas explosion.

“I was straight on the phone to an ambulance as soon as I saw the car on its roof,” he said.

“I was even more shocked to see two men crawling out of the car, they were a bit shaken and one had a gash on his head.”

He added: “They didn’t seem very disorientated but I waited with them and kept them calm until the ambulance arrived.

“It was unbelievable that no-one was killed, whether a pedestrian, the houses occupants or the drivers.”

Martin Swinscoe also of Lord Haddon Road said the residents of one of the houses involved had only moved in three weeks ago.

“I was shocked awake by a loud thud and couldn’t believe what I saw outside my window.”

He added: “When you see a car on it’s roof you expect the worst and from the extent of the damage you would have expected the car’s passengers to have come off a lot worse.”

Police and an ambulance crew attended the scene and put a cordon in place while they cleaned up debris on the street.

One man was taken to the Royal Derby Hospital for a head injury, but was later discharged.

Residents of both properties which were involved in the collision declined to pass comment on the crash.

A 28-year-old man has been arrested and bailed by police in connection with the incident on suspicion of drink driving.

Anyone with further information about the incident is asked to call 101.
