Volunteer to help soldier

As everyone will be aware, this year, 2014, is the centenary of the outbreak of World War One and, quite rightly, there will be many events throughout the country to commemorate this.

May I, therefore, make mention of what was, in 1914, the only charity existing to help and support those of both the serving and ex-service community, and equally important, their family dependants.

This was, and is, the Soldiers Sailors and Airmans Families Association – currently SSAFA. The charity was founded in 1885 nationally and in Derbyshire in 1891. Our sister charity, the British Legion, now the Royal British Legion came into being in 1921. We work very closely with the RBL and them with us throughout Derbyshire.

In 2013, in Derbyshire, SSAFA helped over 320 individuals form every part of the county. Among these were ex-servicemen and women who had been injured in recent conflicts – the Falklands War, both Gulf Wars and, of course, Afghanistan.

To enable SSAFA, to ensure that we are positioned, to continue with this very important work, we need to recruit volunteers to join us and, after training, be ready to respond to the many requests for assistance made to us.

We have a number of volunteer roles within SSAFA, including caseworkers, IT officers, fundraisers, street collectors and friendship visitors. All in local areas. The posts are voluntary and unpaid, but out of pocket expenses are covered

If you feel you have some time to spare to be part of this we would be pleased to hear from you, contact us at our branch HQ at Belper on 01773 828116. The office is staffed from 9am until 3pm Mondays to Thursdays.
