Ilkeston Community hospital has been holding weekend winter clinics for minor injuries

Weekend clinics held at Ilkeston Community Hospital have spared hundreds of Erewash patients a trip to accident and emergency departments.

The clinics, implemented by NHS Erewash Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG)to improve local access to urgent care during the winter, have seen more than 900 patients attend the weekend clinics in the three months up until the end of January.

Patients were directed to the clinic by the NHS non-emergency number when GP surgeries were closed

Designed to treat only minor injuries, the clinic found less than one per cent of patients were referred to A&E departments with the number of Erewash residents receiving emergency treatment in hospital the lowest since May 2012.

Chairman of NHS Erewash CCG Dr Avi Bhatia, said: “We will take the performance of the clinic pilot into account in our current review of urgent care across Erewash before deciding on management of winter pressures this year.”
