Students at Ormiston Ilkeston Enterprise Academy have been given an insight into life as a wheelchair user.

The health and social care students went into Ilkeston in small groups and spent half a day in a wheelchair, taking it in turns to push and sit in it.

They were asked to try clothes on in a shop, go to a travel agent and try to book a holiday, negotiate a lift and visit a bank or Post Office as part of a unit they are studying about equality and discrimination.

Kay Kearton, director of sixth form at the academy, said: “It’s a great empathy exercise for our students as they try to use the wheelchairs, which are very kindly supplied by Jenny Walker at Shopmobility.

“The wheelchairs are not electric so it’s a physical activity and we ask the students to complete several tasks while they are in the town centre.”
