A LONG Eaton schoolgirl had the honour of turning on the town’s Christmas lights after winning a competition.

Emma Louise Ellis of Harrington School won the ‘Why I Want to Switch on the Lights’ contest and joined the Mayor of Erewash, Cllr Kevin Miller, pushing the plunger when the countdown was complete.

Hundreds of people turned out in the town’s Market Place to see the switch-on and enjoy rides, stalls and attractions on Friday.

The Long Eaton Silver Band and Sandiacre Male Voice Choir also performed at the event.
