Police in Ilkeston are appealing for information about a serious assault in the town on Tuesday December 23.

Between about 10.30pm and 11pm a 20-year-old man from Dorset was walking down South Street with a friend when he became involved in an argument with a man who has asked for a cigarette. Several other men appeared and, allegedly without provocation, punched the victim repeatedly on his head and face.

The victim and his friend walked away and the next day he went to hospital for a check-up. Medical staff realised his jaw was broken in two places and he later underwent surgery to fit three plates to repair the damage.

The incident wasn’t reported to the police until Boxing Day.

Anyone who has any information about the assault should contact DC Saj Hussain on 101 and quote crime number 54626/14 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
