McDonald’s leaving town centre

Bath Street was dealt another blow this week as it was announced that McDonald’s is to close down after 28 years in the town centre.

The fast food chain blamed a dip in trade for the decision but said they will be opening a new restaurant on Rutland Street next month.

McDonald’s is the latest big name to leave Ilkeston town centre and this announcement will mean another empty retail space in the Albion Shopping Centre.

Tim Dobbs, McDonald’s Ilkeston franchisee, who will run the new store, said: “I can confirm that in conjunction with McDonald’s, we have made the tough decision to close our restaurant at the Albion Centre in Ilkeston.

“Having traded on Ilkeston high street for over 28 years, this decision was not taken lightly. However, in recent years trading patterns in Ilkeston have changed, and the restaurant was no longer viable. “

The restaurant will close it’s doors for the last time on Saturday May 10.

Staff at the town centre restaurant have all been offered transfers to the new Rutland Street branch due to open on May 21.

Mr Dobbs added: “The opening will create 80 local jobs; a net increase of 40 jobs in the area.

“I would like to thank all our customers who have supported the Ilkeston restaurant, and also all of my staff and colleagues for their efforts over the years.

“We will continue to serve the community, and I can assure you we will work hard to ensure that the new restaurant is a success.”
