More books on offer for local readers

Derbyshire eBook borrowers can download some of the latest titles available thanks to a successful application to the Publishers Association and Society of Chief Librarians by Derbyshire County Council’s library service.

The county is one of only four areas in the country to get this privilege and means residents will now have access to more than 1000 titles, which are not currently available in other areas as part of a year long pilot scheme.

The aim of the pilot is to carry out research into the impact of eBook lending in public libraries on authors, publishers and on the library service so that a suitable model can then be rolled out nationwide.

The eBooks can be borrowed for 21 days after which time they are automatically deleted from the borrower’s mobile device.

Coun Ellie Wilcox, Derbyshire County Council’s deputy cabinet member for health and communities said: “I am delighted that Derbyshire has been chosen for this scheme.

“It is a real accolade for our library service.

“Our eBooks service is growing in popularity month by month and this extra choice of titles will make it even more attractive and convenient.”

“Those residents who find it difficult to get to our libraries – perhaps they are housebound or live in more rural parts of the county – can benefit from this service but it is of course open to any member of Derbyshire libraries and eBooks can be downloaded any time of night or day.”

This eBook service is open to Derbyshire library members. Membership is open to anyone living, working or studying in Derbyshire.

During the pilot year of the eBook scheme anyone who has borrowed a book will be entered into a prize draw to win an eReading device. The draws will take place on a quarterly basis.

The extra eBooks include titles from major publishing houses and prominent authors. These include ‘Bring up the Bodies’, the Booker prize winning novel by Derbyshire born Hilary Mantel, ‘Time to be in earnest’ by PD James and ‘The Hell of it all’ by Charlie Brooker. John Green is a very popular author amongst teenagers. His book, ‘The Fault in Our Stars’, which is being made into a film this year, is also on the list. Other popular authors include James Patterson and Andy McNab.
