A beauty salon, which has been pampering Ilkeston clients for well over a quarter of a century, has been awarded a top industry accolade.

Pam’s Beauty Studio, in East Street, is one of just two salons in the East Midlands to win the sought-after Gold Salon Award, requiring it to meet strict criteria.

The salon’s namesake Pam Brown, 56, is currently transferring the business over to the capable hands of daughter Chelsea Etienne, who accepted the award at the prestigious Beauty UK show in Birmingham recently.

Chelsea, 27, has been working hard to meet the award’s strict criteria to secure an impressive four out of a possible five gold stars.

“It’s a wonderful achievement, especially given what you see around town with shops closing down,” she said.

The awards are only given to salons that can prove they have all the right qualifications, look after their clients well and run the business effectively, she explained.

“It’s a bit like Michelin stars for restaurants but for the beauty industry,” she said.

Members of the expert panel sat in for a busy Saturday in the salon, just off Market Place to see how well the firm was run.

Mayor of Erewash Cllr Val Clare came to officially hand over the award this week – and she had a special honour for Pam – a Mayor’s award for service to the borough.

Pam said: “I’m very, very proud to receive that – it’s lovely.”

Cllr Clare added: “I think it’s fantastic to be in town for 27 years and obviously it’s going to continue as mum eases off and daughter takes over.”
