Neighbours object to homes plan for former garages

FORMER garages in Ilkeston town centre could become 14 new homes if councillors give a plan the go-ahead at a meeting later this month.

Neighbours to the former Wharnecliffe Garage site in Wharnecliffe Road have objected to the plan by Lincoln-based Marshgate Properties on the grounds that the buildings could lead to them being overlooked and wildlife could be lost.

All three letters of objection sent to Erewash Borough Council have come from the same address in New Lawn Road, behind the site.

In a report due to be seen by councillors on Erewash’s planning committee on Wednesday May 30, there are concerns from the council’s housing strategy officer that the development contains no plans to build affordable housing on the site.

The officer questioned why, when there is room for an extra house, was the developer proposing to build 14 homes when 15 would bring it within the threshold for it to make some of the housing affordable.

Council planning officers have recommended that councillors vote to approve the plan subject to conditions.
