A new opencast coal mine near Smalley has been given the go-ahead despite fears that it will double the number of coal wagons on the road.

Around 375,000 tonnes of coal will be extracted from George Farm, Denby, after Derbyshire County Council gave LEM Solutions the go-ahead.

Smalley parish councillor Martyn Miller said he was ‘staggered’: “George Farm will double the number of coal wagons on the road and that’s going to provide a major hazard.”
