A knife-wielding robber dressed as Santa Claus is still on the loose in Derbyshire.

The man made a getaway after terrifying staff at a town restaurant and raiding the safe.

Staff are currently receiving support.

The crime happened at about 10.30pm on Saturday when the man climbed through the drive-through window of KFC in Nottingham Road, Alfreton.

The robber – who was brandishing a large blade – then demanded access to the safe.

He left the scene with a quantity of money.

A Derbyshire police spokesman said: “A man dressed as Santa Claus entered the building through the drive-through window and demanded access to the safe. He has reinforced that with a knife.

“Staff quite rightly backed off and allowed him that and he exited the scene with a quantity of money.”

The spokesman said the force deployed specialist teams – including police dogs – to try and track the armed robber.

He was described as 5ft 10in, of stocky build and is believed to be of Asian ethnicity, police said.

He is still on the loose.

The police spokesman described the crime as “nasty” and said staff had been left traumatised.

A KFC spokesman said the outlet was closed to the public at the time of the raid.

They added: “We’re offering employees any support they need.

“Thankfully no-one was hurt.”

Witnesses or anyone with information should call Derbyshire police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 immediately.
