Ilkeston’s incredible head-balancing pensioner John Evans is lining up a fresh feat to mark 21 years as a charity champion who lifts weights on his head.

His 66th birthday arrives on Easter Sunday but the grandad will be busy practising for the day he raises 25 builders’ buckets on to his head at a hotel in Cossall.

The former brickie has raised more than £200,000 for charity since his unique talent emerged into public view in 1992.

“I love doing it and people enjoy watching me do it,” said John of Awsworth Road, who has appeared live on TV across the world.

His first television appearance was in December 1992, when he balanced 84 milk crates on his head while appearing live on the Fantastic Facts show with host Jonathan Ross.

John is regarded as a big star in many eastern countries, where people carry shopping on their heads but are left open-mouthed when he lifts something which could easily crush him if there were a slip.

The bucket lift will be filmed by a television company and will take place at the Chatterley House Hotel, Cossall, on Wednesday April 24.
