Olympic athlete opens school sports centre

AN OLYMPIC athlete took time out of his London 2012 training programme to open Kirk Hallam Sport and Technology Community College’s new fitness gym and sport centre.

Dr Tim Brabants, a British speed kayaker has won a gold and two bronze medals at previous Olympics.

Dr Brabants is a doctor at the Queens Medical Centre but is on leave to prepare for the London Olympics and is currently training in South Africa.

After cutting the ribbon he answered questions from students.

Vice principal, Aidan Smith, said: “As a doctor and an Olympian Tim was an excellent example for the students.

“His achievements show the importance of school work and sport, the pupils really enjoyed his visit.”

On Wednesday March 30 football legend Sir Trevor Brooking will be at the school for the official opening of the artificial grass pitch which has been funded by the Football Foundation and the Department for Education.
