Celebrations are taking place across Erewash to launch a festival of Olympic-themed events for youngsters in the run-up to the games.

Students at Kirk Hallam Community Technology and Sports College released 100 balloons to mark 100 days to go until the Olympics begin.

The balloons were the colours of Great Britain, India – the team that the school will be supporting in the Paralympics – and Japan.

Rhian Lilley, Erewash School Sport Partnership development manager, said it was the beginning of an exciting term of activities in the run up to the Olympics.

She added: “We want to get as many young people as possible involved and celebrating the upcoming Games with lots of competitions and events, including our own torch relays and Olympic mascot visits.”

On the same day riders taking part in a 100-mile cycle relay across Derbyshire made their first stop at Brackenfield School in Long Eaton.
