Ilkeston Community Hospital will remain host to patients from Heanor Memorial Hospital after it has been revealed the site could stay closed for a further six weeks.

The Ilkeston Road site will be shut while repairs are carried out to the boiler system.

All inpatients from the Heanor hospital were moved to Ilkeston at the end of September after brown asbestos was found in the boiler room.

They were due to return on Tuesday October 7, however, Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Trust, has announced that during the course of work to remove the asbestos it has uncovered further repairs required to the boiler control system and pipework.

Director of operations William Jones said: “The repairs would not normally be too involved, but due to the ongoing contained asbestos it will need to be carried out under strict control and the supervision of a registered asbestos management company.

“We are also required to inform the Health and Safety Executive.”

The asbestos is said to be safely contained and is not airborne.
