An appeal has been launched to raise funds for a blue plaque to honour aeronautical engineer Oswald Short at his childhood home in Stanton-by-Dale.

Hugh Oswald Short , who died in 1969, was the son of Samuel Short, the chief engineer to the Stanton Ironworks Company.

Oswald was the driving force behind the famous aeronautical engineers Short Brothers, establishing the firm’s seaplane factory at Rochester in 1914 and an airship factory at Cardington two years later.

Erewash Borough Council council is working with the Friends of Erewash Museum volunteers to raise £375 to manufacture and install a blue plaque at his childhood home in Lows Lane.

Councillor Geoffrey Smith said: “The ‘Shorts’ name is a very famous one and it is right that, as a son of Erewash, his birthplace should be recognised.”
