A series of shed break-ins across the area has prompted police to step up patrols and issue crime prevention advice.
Clusters of similar crimes have been reported over the last fortnight in Ilkeston, Derby and South Derbyshire.
Pc Russ Crooks, from Ilkeston’s Rural Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “We’re carrying out extra patrols to see where people can improve their security and give them advice on how to do so.
“Thieves will only target a shed or outbuilding if it’s easy and worth it, so we want people to think about keeping valuables indoors and investing in kit such as shed alarms and spotlights.
“By being vigilant and mindful of security, hopefully people can prevent a crime from happening in the first place and avoid the distress that comes with it.”
Officers are advising homeowners to mark property with a UV pen or products such as SmartWater.
Members of the public are urged to report suspicious activity by calling 101 — or 999 in an emergency.
