Police in safety call to cyclists

Cycle safety in Long Eaton has become a priority for police.

PC James Crookall and PCSO Heidi Andrew of the Long Eaton Town Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team took to the streets in response to an increase in reports about cyclists, in particular youngsters riding around the town without bike lights at night.

PC Crookall said: “We were increasingly concerned about these calls for service, youngsters out and about on their bikes and not using any form of lights which is extremely dangerous.”

Thirteen youngsters were found to have inadequate lighting. They were issued with reflective equipment and letters were sent home to their parents.

In addition 11 adults who were also stopped and issued with reflective equipment. It is hoped the initiative will reduce the amount of cyclists putting themselves at risk.
