Pupils at an Ilkeston school have packed and wrapped 70 shoeboxes to send to a Gambian school where they sponsor a student.
Children at Hallam Fields Junior School have donated items asked for by the school including toys, toileteries and stationery as well as other things that children have brought in from home.
The Longfield Lane School sponsor six-year-old Fatoumatta Fillah helping her get an education.
Their sponsorship pays for her lessons, uniform, school equipment and school dinners and it was her story and updates that has inspired pupils to send over the gifts.
Teacher Gwen Maddison who runs the school council said: “All of the children have been really keen to do their bit.
“We had so many donations and we sent some spare stock from school as well.
“It’s really nice that we know where the stuff is going and that Fatoumatta and her friends will benefit from the pupils and their parents efforts.”
The shoe boxes will start their 3,750 mile journey to the African country this week firstly by road and then a container ship before back in a car to the destination.
Gwen added: “It’s been a great project and all of the children have really enjoyed it.
“It’s made them all realise how lucky they are and they can’t wait to see photos of whne the chilldren receive the boxes.”
