The moment an Ilkeston shopkeeper swung a bottle at masked ram raiders who broke into his store was caught on CCTV cameras.
Police have released the footage this week of the break-in at Checkley’s Londis on October 25.
The masked burglars struck at about 9.10pm just after the store in Little Hallam Lane had closed.
The three-minute clip shows John Checkley, who was behind the counter when the Ford Mondeo was reversed into the shutters, pushed to the floor by one of the robbers as he tried to fend off the attack. The offender then throws a shopping basket at him.
Speaking to the Advertiser just after the break-in, Mr Checkley said: “When you’re not expecting something like that you’re not quite sure what’s going on.
“The first thing I noticed was all the glass on the floor because the door was shattered.”
The footage shows two of the men get out of the car and kick the door open and burst inside shouting at Mr Checkley, 65.
They struggled with a member of staff, who tried to stop the gang, but they made off with an empty cash cassette from the ATM machine, which was being refilled at the time.
Two men, aged 26 and 35, have been arrested in connection with the robbery, questioned and released on bail while the investigation continues.
Anyone with information, or anyone who can help identify the men in the footage, should call police on 101 orspeak anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
