Ready for cooking

CELEBRITIES were the plat du jour at Kirk Hallam Community Technology College this week, as the school held its own version of TV cooking competition, Ready, Steady Cook on Thursday.

Nottinghamshire school chef and author Jeanette Orrey, who rose to fame after inspiring Jamie Oliver's crusade to improve school dinners, judged the competition in which teams of year seven children and Mayor of Erewash, Cllr Terry Holbrook, two PCSOs and Ram FM DJs Dino and Pete had to produce two-course meals from bags of unseen ingredients.

Sue Bramley, head of food studies at the school, said: "Everyone did really well.

"It was all part of our focus on food week for the year sevens, and the children enjoyed experimenting with food."

Of the 11 groups that took part, the winning team was led by IT teacher Adam Spence. The bags of food were provided by Tesco.
