COLLEGE staff in Ilkeston and Morley have been left fearing for their future after being offered voluntary redundancy, it has been revealed this week.

In an email sent to all staff at Derby College leaked to the Advertiser this week, principal David Croll said that financial difficulties were to blame for the decision.

He said that although there were no current plans to force staff to leave, he could not rule out compulsory redundancies in the future.

Staff are said to be upset about the move, but not surprised.

Many have contacted the ‘Tiser since the college bought out South East Derbyshire College in 2010, concerned for the safety of their jobs.

Mr Croll, who is set to retire in September, said he met with union representatives to discuss the planned voluntary redundancies earlier this month.

His email also said that an ‘enhanced package’ was available to those accepting voluntary redundancy.

A spokesman for the college said: “Whilst Derby College is in a stronger position than many other colleges, we too are facing ongoing funding cuts.

“As part of the college-wide review of spending, there has been a voluntary severance scheme on offer for sometime now, which will continue to be available until May 31.

“There are no proposals for compulsory redundancies at present although this route can not be ruled out as a necessity in the future.”

Derby College has campuses in Field Road, Ilkeston, and Broomfield Hall in Morley, as well as sites in Derby and Heanor.

It unveiled ambitious plans earlier this year to close the Field Road site and re-open in new state-of-the-art premises in the centre of town, possibly in the former magistrates court in New Lawn Road.

The plan has found a mixed response in Ilkeston, especially after bosses announced that they plan to replace the old site with a supermarket andn housing.

The college recently received permission to build 53 homes on the former Cavendish Road campus.
