A new road in Ilkeston has been named after a soldier from the town who was killed in Afghanistan.

Pte Brian Tunnicliffe, 33, died in 2007 when the vehicle he was driving in Helmand province came off the road and landed on its roof.

Tunnicliffe Close will be in the Briars Chase development off Heanor Road, close to Greenhalgh Crescent, which was named after another soldier Lance Sgt Dave Greenhalgh, who died in 2010.

Erewash councillors welcomed the move at a planning committee meeting.

“It’s a fitting tribute,” said Cllr Frank Phillips. “But I would like somewhere a notice as to why those soldiers have been named.”

Cllr Robert Parkinson added: “In a few years’ time people will forget.”

Head of planning Steve Birkinshaw said he will talk to developers Taylor Wimpey about getting a plaque put up on the estate.
