RSPCA called out to ‘attack on swan’

A swan is believed to have been attacked and killed by a dog in a canal close to an Ilkeston care home at the weekend.

RSPCA inspectors were called to the incident close to Canal Vue care home in Awsworth Road on Saturday but arrived too late and could not find the bird.
A spokesman for the RSPCA said: “The RSPCA did receive a call regarding a dead swan at the location.

“An inspector did attend the location - but the swan’s body had been removed and all that remained were some feathers on the floor.

“Therefore if anyone has any further information about what happened we would urge them to call the RSPCA cruelty line on 0300 1234 999.”

Sandra Lamberley, whose daughter witnessed the incident, told the Advertiser: “The dog went into the canal and killed the swan which was with its cygnets.
“It’s about time that dogs were kept on leads at all times to prevent this from happening again.”
