Service belongs to the people

Sir,

I read Councillor Corbett’s letter regarding the timing of the Remembrance Sunday service in Ilkeston with great interest, especially as I had attended the full council meeting when Councillor Moloney’s motion was discussed.

I have now lived in Ilkeston for the last five years. In each of the eight boroughs/cities that I have previously lived in, all Remembrance Day services were held at 11am, as this is the case in the vast majority of the UK.

Does Councillor Corbett really believe that the Remembrance Day service in Ilkeston belongs to the Erewash Tory or any other political party and the Royal British Legion.

He states that at a meeting with the RBL on July 14, RBL members voted ‘overwhelmingly’ to keep the time of the service at 3pm in Ilkeston. In fact, a total of 18 RBL members expressed that preference ‘overwhelmingly’ when the RBL in Ilkeston has in excess of 100 members.

No, the Remembrance Day service in Ilkeston belongs to the people of Ilkeston.
