Shop owner foots a £3,500 fine for planning offences

A shop owner has been fined £3,500 after pleading guilty to failing to comply with enforcement notices served on him by the council.

Surjit Kumar, 40, who owns a row of shops on Pasture Road in Stapleford was served an enforcement notice, by Broxtowe Borough Council, relating to five large storage containers which were. behind the shops without planning permission

Nottingham Magistrate’ Court was also told that Mr Kumar, of The Paddocks in Long Eaton, had informed the council in the 16 months previous that he intended to apply for planning permission but had never done so.

He had been advised that his application was unlikely to succeed in view of the size of the containers, their prominence and their proximity to neighbouring residential properties.

The shop owner was also ordered to pay an additional £395 in costs and victim subcharges by Nottingham Magistrates Court.

The presiding Magistrates said that Mr. Kumar had received plenty of warnings and was not unfamiliar with the workings of the council or their regulations.
